We will meet on the street by the laundromat in Morris at 9:30 on Aug. 4 (weather permitting) to drive in a caravan to Nine Mile Swamp. It will take about an hour to get there. If you have a 2003 DeLorme New York atlas, you can find Nine Mile Swamp north of Sherburne off of Rt. 12, McWire Road (in the crack of the Atlas of course, so it's hard to see!) between pages 62 & 63. Bring a canoe/kayak, life jacket, water, snack or lunch to eat in the canoe as there is no solid ground to step upon. (I tried it once and went in up to my waist!) The hike on August 11 will meet at the Clark Sports Center at 9:30 AM and consolidate cars/riders. The hike will be on the Tower trails - fairly modest - and we will be done around noon. On Tuesday, Aug. 18, Julie Smith will lead a bike ride on the rail trail starting in Stamford. Meet at the "Hearths a' Fire" parking lot on Rt. 23 just west of the Volkswagen Dealership at 9:30. This hike will run along the West Branch of the Delaware on the old railroad grade, so it will be level and on the short side [because, oddly enough, haying operations are still going on at the Seifried farm, and we're hoping to bale hay on the same day]. The trail is largely shady, and there will likely be bugs and tall weeds in places. Meeting time is 10:00. Call Linda Seifried, 265-3780, for location. | ||
