Hartwick State Forest Hike - July 01, 2008

Thirty-one ADKers hiked snowmobile paths of Hartwick State Forest on July 1. The weather was pleasant, the paths soft and wide, and the forest shady and mature. Interesting finds along the way included mushrooms, toads, birds, Purple Raspberry plants in full bloom, and Red Elderberry plants bearing fruit. Doug Fielder took the group picture on the Home Page, and the three pictures below: 1) The Path, 2) Roots of a Fallen Tree, and 3) an old specimen of the Shelf Fungus, Ganoderma tsugae. The host for this fungus is always Hemlock, Tsuga canadensis.

New Chapter Link to the ADK Hiking Page

The parent ADK organization has informed us of a new feature on their Web site called the ADK Hiking Page http://www.adk.org/trails/Hiking_Page.aspx. The hiking page provides access to a wealth of information about hiking in the Adirondacks. This is a work in progress and we plan to update and expand it in the future. If you have any comments or suggestions, please send me an e-mail.

Hooker Mountain Hike Report By Scott Fielder

June 17 started out rather ominously as a cloudy/misty day but 24 brave souls gathered at our house in Chaseville for a caravan off to Hooker Mountain, the highest point in the Town of Maryland. We enjoyed a pleasant hike on the trail through the state land emerging on Norton Road and continuing on Dog Hill Road and back to our cars on Hooker Mountain Road. In places a carpet of ferns filled the forest. I rescued several Red Efts from our many feet on the trail. Red Efts are the terrestrial stage of the Red Spotted Newt (Notophthalmus viridescens viridescens).

Please Visit Our New Link – Frog Pond

On Tuesday, July 8, ADKers Carol McIntosh and Larry Seiders will lead an ADK hike that ends at their home and garden on Morgan Avenue in Oneonta. Their fabulous wildflower garden, called Frog Pond, is the same name given to Carol’s website. This delightful website photographically documents many activities of the Susquehanna Chapter of ADK. Carol has given us permission to link her website www.frogpond.us to ours. Please visit the new link and scroll down to see all the beautiful photographs. – Bob Thomas (Web Designer) and Currie Marr (Webmaster).
